Title:
Winter is Enemy for Quake’s Homeless Millions

Summary:
The earthquake in Pakistan had killed 74,000 people but has left 500,000 people without homes. The international community is not supporting the relief aid like they did for the tsunami. The aid coming in is only 28% of what the UN estimates the people will need before Dec. 1st because the harsh winter that comes after Dec. 1st will make the people unreachable. Many organizations are willing and able to supply winter tents to house many of the people, have ordered the tents but the tents are not available; they are on back order. Many people are going to go homeless for the winter.

Thoughts:
Some say that the lack of international support is caused by the fact that most gave so much for the tsunami but there are so many situations that need financial support and don’t get the money. Some believe that this earthquake is going to be one of those situations. In the tsunami the majority of the financial support need was received with in the first 10 days after. So it is looking like the victims of this earthquake will not be getting the same support that the tsunami victims did. This might start to bring to light the way the international community gives relief. The way the international community currently seems to give the majority of the money when many lives are lost and not as much when the death toll is lower but the destruction of the houses and other buildings is great.

Projections:
The article implies that many of the young, weak, and old will not make it through the harsh winter ahead. If the international community is unable to get the support needed to supply the homeless people with shelter and food, then when the winter passes many are going to have lost there lives to malnutrition and freezing temperatures. -- DianaBlomster - 24 Oct 2005
