Acceptable Use Document
•Educational Use
-The Technology Illiterate School District and the Internet offer a wealth of educational material to our teachers and students. Original source materials, information data, images, and computer software may be brought into the classroom. Access to the Internet is an important part of our plan to create lifelong learners who know how to find information in our rapidly changing world. Internet access makes contact with people all over the world possible, bringing into the classroom experts in every content area. Teachers can use these resources for individual and group projects, curricular materials, and idea sharing. Expertise in our schools may be shared with others around the world. Educators may share lesson plans and may network to enrich their skills.
-Students will use school internet for educational purposes only--this includes classroom projects and activities, including career development.
•Filtering
-Filtering or blocking of Internet sites on the Technology Illiterate School District network will be implemented for two reasons:
1) To respond to the need to meet federal requirements, such as Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), and is a federal law that requires schools to protect students from inappropriate content on the Internet. Failure to comply with CIPA risks the district’s funding from the federal government.
2) To address other, in-district concerns regarding network security, use of bandwidth, copyright law, and support of district educational goals and curriculum.
Based on these reasons, certain internet site may not be accessible through the Technology Illiterate School District network. Some categories of site may be completely filtered or blocked out, others may be selectively blocked up, depending on their educational or curricular application.
•Review Process
-The technology of internet filtering software is not perfect. Both ”over-blocking” and “under-blocking” can occur. Some sites get blocked even though they do not violate either CIPA guidelines or the District’s Acceptable Use Policy.
-Process to request block of inappropriate site:
1) Staff should make students aware of their responsibility to report inappropriate sites to a staff member.
-Process to request a removal of a block:
1) Staff should contact technology support for assistance in previewing.
•Due Process
1) In the event there is an allegation that a user has violated the District Acceptable Use Policy and Agreement, the user will be provided with a written notice of the alleged violation and an opportunity to present an explanation to an administrator.
2) Disciplinary actions will be tailored to meet specific concerns related to specific violation and will follow procedures outlined by the collective bargaining agreements, district policy, and state and federal law.
•Safety

•Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement
1) Users will not plagiarize works that they find on the internet. Plagiarism is taking the ideas, writings, images or materials of others and presenting them as if they were original to the user.
2) Users will respect the rights of copyright owners. Copyright infringement occurs when an individual inappropriately reproduces a work that is protected by a copyright.
