Wiki vs. Blog

There are differences between using a Wiki and Blog. The Wiki pages enable users to edit just about every aspect of what is written on any given page and about any given topic at any time. The main difference between Wiki and Blog is that with Blog, only the author may edit the original content. There may be users who can comment on what was originally written, but once again, only the author can edit the original blog.

With a Blog you are able to design the page like any other web page using style sheets and HTML code. While on the Wiki you can use HTML, though it works better if you use the special code made for the program.

The Wiki also gives you tips on the bottom of the editing page that help with the formatting that you don’t get when using a Blog. (If you don’t know the code it can found by clicking on more formatting help written in blue.) However there are two major differences in formating between the two. Blog formating is very customizable. In fact it is unlimited. In blog formating you can used every feature available on the web to customize every function and look and feel of your blog. Wiki took the more professional approach. Formating is very limited when compared with the blog format. But thats not to say wiki doesn't have its own style.

On a Blog page there is usually only one Author, but usually everyone is allowed to comment on what is written. On the Wiki server the only way limit who is allowed to edit an article is by creating a group.

The formatting is also different. On a Blog page there are many articles usually listed in chronological order. Then below each article there can be a place for someone to write in about the article. Only authors are allowed to edit the initial articles. You can also make different Categories to write about using links to other pages.

On the Wiki server the article is formatted into one long article. It best organized by making a list of who participated in the editing process at the end of the article listed in chronological order.

Most Blogs offer an RSS feed. When you subscribe to an RSS feed from a blog, your RSS aggregator will gather the latest articles from that Blog.

The Wiki also offers an RSS feed, but instead of sending the latest articles, it only alerts you to the latest changes made to articles. This has it's advantage, it is a convenient way for someone to monitor the latest changes without having to refresh the changes page, but many argue that a blog's RSS feed is a more useful syndication.
